Seasearch South and West Wales

Seasearch is a national project for volunteer sports divers who have an interest in what they're seeing under water, want to learn more and want to help protect the marine environment. The main aim is to map out the various types of seabed found in the near-shore zone around the whole of the British Isles. But we are also recording what lives in each area, establishing the richest sites for marine life, the sites where there are problems and the sites that need protection.

Find out more about the national programme and how you can get involved here.

Between 2005 and 2009 surveys were completed around Skokholm Island; throughout Milford Haven; Sarn Cynfelin, Aberystwyth; Gower; North and South Pembrokshire coasts; The Smalls; Grassholm; Gateholm; Ramsey and Strumble Head.  Summary reports  for these and previous surveys in the Region are available in pdf format from the Seasearch website achievements page.

If you would like to do a Seasearch course or join a diving survey in the region then check the Programme page

Recent Seasearching
Seasearch began in South and West Wales in the late 1980’s with surveys organised by Francis Bunker in Cardigan Bay; Stackpole, South Pembrokeshire and the Gower Peninsula.  Kate Lock took over as voluntary co-ordinator in 1996 and surveys were completed around Ramsey Island, Daugleddau and in St Brides Bay. Jen Jones also ran seafan and eelgrass surveys in Pembrokeshire.
In 2005 funding allowed the appointment of two co-ordinators to the region – Kate Lock as West Wales co-ordinator (Milford Haven Entrance to Aberystwyth) and Vicki Howe (South Pembrokeshire to Cardiff Bay) and a new flush of Seasearch courses and diving weekends flourished.
Following the arrival of her son Albie, Vicky has gone into temporary retirement and Kate is the key contact for all south and west Wales Seasearching.
