Skomer Marine Nature Reserve Advisory Committee

The Nature Conservancy Council (predecessor to the Countryside Council for Wales) submission to the Secretary of State for designation of the Skomer MNR included a commitment to establish an Advisory Committee to provide advice to NCC, and in turn CCW, to managing the MNR to meet its conservation and scientific aims.

The experience and acquired wisdom of the Skomer Voluntary Marine Reserve Management Committee was not lost and its members were invited by CCW to form the core of the MNR Advisory Committee.  The membership was increased to include more sectoral interests and, particularly, scientific expertise.

The Advisory Committee, which normally meets annually, was initially chaired by CCW, but Dr Robin Crump was appointed Chairman on his retirement from the Field Studies Council in 2002. Meetings are attended by the Skomer MNR team, who also support and service the Committee, and other CCW marine and local staff.   CCW’s senior managers are also invited and when they have attended their presence was welcomed as it provided members with opportunities to ensure their advice was being heard at the highest levels in CCW.

Advisory Committee minutes are available here.
